09-05-06 North Dakota Highlighted in the Wall Street Journal

Bismarck was highlighted last Thursday in the Wall Street Journal in a story by Joel Kotkin, an Irvine Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation. Highlighted by the tremendous job growth and opportunity occurring in our community and region. According to Kotkin, "At a time when the much-celebrated coasts creak from rising interest rates, faltering income levels and soaring energy prices, this windswept, energy-rich city of 57,000 on the western edge of the Dakota plains is experiencing the best of times. Cities like this one out in the far-off hinterland -- Iowa City, Sioux Falls, Fargo, Grand Forks, Rapid City -- now are enjoying job growth rates that, if they don't rival Las Vegas, certainly put to shame those of most major metropolitan areas. Unemployment is negligible and wages are rising across virtually all job categories."

Medcenter One, located in Bismarck, N.D., is a not-for-profit, multi-specialty medical center that integrates clinic and hospital care.

Medcenter One's Q&R Clinic was founded in 1902 by two renowned physicians, Drs. Eric P. Quain and Niles O. Ramstad, with a vision of providing outstanding patient care. Q&R Clinic was the second multi-specialty clinic in the nation, second only to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Medcenter One is a fully integrated healthcare system that consists of eight primary care clinics covering western and central North Dakota; a hospital; a home health agency, three kidney dialysis centers, four long-term care facilities, a college of nursing and multiple hospital affiliations.

Medcenter One's innovative and high-quality care is recognized each year by prestigious healthcare organizations. Most recently, Medcenter One was recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a Blue Distinction Center for cardiac and bariatric surgery care, by Thomson Healthcare (formerly Solucient) as a Top 100 Hospital for cardiovascular care and by American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Magnet organization.

St. Alexius Medical Center
What began as the first hospital in the Dakota Territory in 1885 has flourished along with the region's population and economy to become a complete medical center serving central and western North Dakota, northern South Dakota and eastern Montana.

St. Alexius Medical Center has gained a national reputation for its high-quality care, modern technology and top-notch, friendly people. While many things have changed since the late 1800s, one thing remains constant... their mission to receive and serve all as Christ.

Besides their main facility in Bismarck, North Dakota, St. Alexius works in cooperation with other hospitals and clinics throughout the region to support local efforts and provide specialized care when and if required. Their outreach activity includes an interactive telemedicine network, hospital affiliations, satellite clinics and biomedical engineering - just to name a few.

Also, in order to meet their current and future patients' needs in the changing health care industry, they are teamed up with the PrimeCare network of health care organizations. The region's most respected healthcare providers have joined forces to form the PrimeCare health group. These are the doctors, clinics and hospitals that so many have come to know and trust. PrimeCare stands for quality care, available care, contained costs and the freedom to choose your doctor. Bringing together advanced technologies and highly trained, caring professionals, we are PrimeCare - Centers of Excellence. The UND Center for Family Medicine is a PrimeCare Network Member.
