  Dr. Karin Willis - Assistant Director
Dr. Willis graduated from the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences in 2005, receiving the Charles & Emma Bollinger Memorial Scholarship Endowment for 2004-2005. Her undergraduate degree is from the University of Montana with majors in political science and German. Before entering medical school, she left a ten-year career working in the public policy arena in Washington, D.C. For five years she worked as a staffer on Capitol Hill for the likes of John Kerry on his POW/MIA affiars committee and Al Gore's vice presidential transition team. She then left the Hill and spent six years in the Beltway working on health policy. She initially provided government relations and marketing services to the Army Medical Command and then became a consultant for health care firms that specialize in military care. Dr. Willis is fluent in German and Russian (reading comprehension). She enjoys outdoor activities - bicycling, tennis, walking, hiking and leisure reading of fiction, non-fiction, national and foreign affairs policy journals, and news. Dr. Willis is a Bismarck, ND native. Returning home, she and her husband now have two babies that keep the family busy.

  Dr. Jeff Hostetter - Program Director
Dr. JeffHostetter Effective December 1, 2006 the Center for Family Medicine will have new leadership, with Dr. Hostetter taking on the Program Directorship role at the Bismarck site.

In addition to caring for his patients, Dr. Hostetter has provided coverage of emergency rooms and hospital services on weekends in rural underserved communities such as Garrison and Fort Yates. Dr. Hostetter has served as both an Assistant Professor and Community Faculty Preceptor during his tenure at UND’s Center for Family Medicine.

Dr. Hostetter is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington, with special training in Indian Health Pathway and wound care.

He completed his Family Medicine Residency at the UND Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck (the recipient of the “Buckingham Award” as the Outstanding Family Medicine Resident for North Dakota in 2003), then practiced at Standing Rock Indian Health Services Hospital in Fort Yates.

His research includes work on Hepatitis C treatment and Resident education. He has presented at the Centers for Disease Control Hepatitis C conference in Washington, D.C. and the American Corrections Association national conference. Dr. Hostetter is currently serving as an Investigator for a study of an investigational medication for obese patients, as well as an investigational study to evaluate the long-term pulmonary and cardiovascular safety of EXUBERA® in patients with diabetes mellitus.

His other interests include Native American health, cultural awareness, fly fishing, woodworking, motorcycling, writing poetry, reading science fiction, traveling, plus playing hockey and guitar (not simultaneously). He enjoys coaching little league baseball and spending time with his family— especially outdoors.

  Dr. Jackie  Quisno - Associate Program Director
Dr. Jackie Quisno Dr. Quisno is dedicated to providing care while empowering patients in their own health and well-being.

Growing up on the Fort Belknap Reservation in North Central Montana helped form Dr. Quisno’s interest in Native American health and women’s health, specifically obstetrical care and pediatrics.

A graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, WA, Dr. Quisno specialized in Family Medicine at the UND Family Practice Center and graduated from the Bismarck Residency Program in 2002. Her most recent practice was with the Federal Government at Standing Rock Indian Health Services (IHS) Hospital in Fort Yates, ND.

Dr. Quisno was recently honored as the 2006 Recipient of the Indian Health Services (IHS) National Director's Award for her dedication to leadership and team motivation. Dr. Quisno is active in the ND Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

A mother of four children, Dr. Quisno savors time with her family, plus reading, baking and traveling. She looks forward to providing care to UND Center for Family Medicine patients and their families -- and enjoying the area with her own family.

Dr. Quisno is an Assistant Professor in the Clinician Scholar Track at UND and now serves as the Associate Program Director. A new focus for her as a faculty member will be recruitment of residents.

  Dr. Ben  Muscha - Assistant Program Director
Dr. Ben Muscha Dr. Muscha is most proud of his positive impact on patients’ lives. A 1992 graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks, Dr. Muscha completed his residency at the UND Family Medicine Center in Bismarck. He then worked at the Carrington Health Care Center.

In addition to expert care for his patients, Dr. Muscha shares his knowledge with future physicians and served as an Assistant Professor in Clinician Scholar Track at his alma mater. Dr. Muscha is active in the American Academy of Family Physicians, North Dakota Academy of Family Physicians, American Medical Association and the Sixth District Medical Society.

Dr. Muscha was previously in charge of rounds at nursing homes and the Annunciation Priory. His main focus as a faculty member (Past Associate Program Director until August 15, 2007) was recruitment of residents and evaluation/monitoring of their academic standing as they progress through the Residency Program. He most recently practiced at Sakakawea Hazen Clinic and has recently returned to the UND Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck full-time.


Dr. Muscha also enjoys ice fishing, biking, tennis, hockey and weekend automobile surgery (fixing cars).

  Dr. Guy  Tangedahl - Assistant Program Director
Dr. Guy Tangedahl Dr. Tangedahl provides care for patients in all stages of life, with an emphasis on geriatric care.

A Bismarck native, Dr. Tangedahl earned his medical degree and completed residency training at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine. After seven years of medical practice in Minot and Parshall, North Dakota, he joined the UND Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck where he served as the Program Director for twelve years (1994-2006). He is looking forward to continuing on a part-time contract as an Assistant Professor with UND Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck.

Holding Board Certifi cation in Family Medicine with a Certifi cate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics, he has been actively involved with geriatric and long–term care issues on a local, state and national level. Dr. Tangedahl recently served as the Principal Investigator for the Dakota Geriatric Education Centers (GEC) grant.

He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and is President-elect of the North Dakota Academy of Family Physicians.

Dr. Tangedahl and his family belong to Century Baptist Church. They enjoy golf during the spring and summer; hunting in the fall; and hockey in the winter. (Go Fighting Sioux!)

  Dr. Jay  Huber - Assistant Program Director
Dr. Jay Huber As a doctor of osteopathic medicine, Dr. Huber practices a “whole person” approach to health care. Instead of treating specific symptoms, he concentrates on the musculoskeletal system, which infl uences the condition of all other body systems.

A graduate of the University of North Texas & Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth, Texas, Dr. Huber completed his Internal Medicine internship and residency at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. He also served as Medical Director at healthcare facilities in Bismarck, Mandan and Carrington.

He is a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, an Assistant Professor at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences, serves on various healthcare committees and has received several awards for excellence in physiology and cardiology. Dr. Huber has presented more than 50 instructive presentations in the last five years, focused on diabetes, cardiovascular disease and weight control. He also has a private practice in Bismarck.

Dr. Huber enjoys flying (he has his pilot’s license) and is an avid sports enthusiast.

  Dr. Gary  Betting - Assistant Program Director
Dr. Gary Betting Dr. Betting has led research efforts to enhance the medical understanding of key issues while providing advanced care to his patients. His research includes work with postmenopausal osteoporosis and chronic renal failure in patients receiving hemodialysis.

A graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Grand Forks, Dr. Betting completed his residency at the UND Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck. He then worked at St. Alexius Medical Center.

Dr. Betting is a consultant for the North Dakota State Department of Human Services on a variety of issues, serves as an Assistant Professor at his alma mater and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, North Dakota Academy of Family Physicians and the Sixth District Medical Society.

He enjoys snowboarding, volleyball, rollerblading, hockey and biking (on a two-wheel, no-engine model, thanks).

  Shelly Botsford - F.N.P.
ShellyBotsford The UND Center for Family Medicine welcomes Shelly Botsford, FNP, to our Bismarck site. Shelly's practice centers on women's health, with an emphasis on skin care and dermatology disorders. She is certified in pulsed-light therapy for the treatment of a variety of skin problems.

An accomplished Certified Family Nurse Practitioner since 1997, Shelly Botsford has years of experience in providing care to patients of all ages. Shelly earned her Bachelor and Master of Nursing degrees from the University of Mary. She taught the Graduate Pharmacology course at the University of Mary, served the health care needs of Washburn and Underwood, N.D. for seven years, and was Director of the Mid-Dakota Clinic's Skin Care Program.

Shelly enjoys RV travel, boating and fishing with her husband and two daughters. She owns two horses and rides competitively in the Dressage Arena. Shelly is looking forward to providing care for our patients and their families.

  Dr. Robert  Beattie  - Chair, Department of Family & Community Medicine
Dr. Robert Beattie Dr. Beattie assumed the Chairmanship of the Department of Family Medicine, UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences effective January 1, 2006.

A native of Garrison, ND, Beattie served as president at United Clinic Physicians since 1999 and was chief of the family medicine and obstetrics-gynecology services and chief of staff at West Regional Medical Center in Hettinger, ND. He served his second year as president of the North Dakota Medical Association; his term ended in September 2005.

For the UND medical school, he served as a preceptor for the Center for Family Medicine in Bismarck and coordinator of the Rural Opportunities in Rural Medicine (ROME) program in Hettinger.

An alumnus of UND, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in natural science and conducted research as a graduate student in physiology prior to enrolling in the medical school. In 1989, he earned the Doctor of Medicine degree from the UND medical school and took residency training at UND's family medicine program in Bismarck where he also served as chief resident (Resident Class of 1992).

Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, he holds memberships in the American Academy of Family Physicians, the National Rural Health Association and the North Dakota Medical Association (NDMA). He has held several offices in the NDMA and served on the board of directors of the North Dakota Academy of Family Physicians from 1990 to 1996.

He and his wife, Susan, a registered nurse, have seven children.
